Applying for your home loan

For many people, securing a mortgage loan can be one of the more distressing elements of buying a home. But it doesn't have to be. I've got great connections to several mortgage lenders in the Columbus area, and they've helped me recognize some things that will make the loan application process much easier.

1 – Compile a list of questions regarding your loan program

Be sure you have a list of questions if you find that you do not thoroughly grasp the ins and outs of the different loan programs. I or one of my lender contacts will assist you with understanding the advantages and disadvantages of both programs, because it can be hard to understand the distinctions between both fixed and adjustable rate mortgages.

2 – Determine when you want to lock

When you lock in the interest rate, your lender is guaranteed to hold to the mortgage interest rates for the loan – most often at the time the loan application is submitted. By floating the rate, you can lock the rate at any time between the day you apply for your loan and closing. Buyers who opt to float conclude interest rates will drop in the near future. 3 – Decide if you want to pay additional points to decrease your rate

If you choose to pay additional points to lower the rate of your loan, you will do so by paying for them in cash at the time of closing. Every point is 1 percent of the mortgage loan. To determine if buying points is the best option for you, click here to use our points calculator.

4 – Bring your paperwork

Obtaining a loan requires lots of paperwork, so you should take some time to get all your documentation together. Click here to get a feel for common information that goes on a loan application.
